Agony of Ati

Decades of being a human libation
The sputtering wick, channel of gods and demons
Ends with barely an acrid wisp of thought
And still-burning eyes of unhindered vision.
The point escapes me but for what reason?
Nothing comes between me and my refuge
Except lingering hangover, a fearful memory,
The many wrong turns made
Forgotten midnight vomits and pissings
Disconnected mornings of rising human wrecks
Always repurposed for new roles, parts and repairs.
Slowly I accept this ghost, living again this season
With lessening dreams, hopes and arrears,
Samsara cycles are no longer geared,
To keep pace with a genuine heart
That staggers and begs, a self-appointed leper
Beauty looks ugly and older than years.
Not arisen, not destroyed, nor resisted
Still it's annoying
To be patient, waiting and waiting,
On what never arose, is not arisen,
Nor will arise
To happen,
As choiceless choice
Accepting avoidance
Happily despairing
Leaning into the burn,
Feeling torn as the world grows
Row after row, mile upon mile
Of gold studded husks
Of future food for cattle, crows and worms.
Hogging the road one drives on and on
As though there were something to own
Something to truck and carry over.
It's time to wake up and smell the party
That's already always over before the fun begins
No getting favors or half-bottles to carry now,
For taking one step into the arctic blast on this new year
Means one moment is instantly frozen.

Advice to Konchok Tashi

Universal form of Buddhas past, present and future--
May the perfect Buddha Lake-Born protect us!

By the power of faith and intense devotion
From the glorious teacher's wisdom-mind transference
You discover the supreme path of profound view and meditation.
From now on until fixation on samsara is destroyed,
Pierce the crucial points of practice with intense discipline!

The essence of all Buddhas is bodhichitta.
The essence of all beings is bodhichitta.
The essence of all appearance is bodhichitta.
The pure equality of three realms of existence is bodhichitta.
Not an atom is beyond bodhichitta.

In the nature of bodhichitta that
Dwells as the fundamental ground,
Birth, cessation, permanence, annihilation
Coming and going, oneness and manyness
Are the vastness of self-manifest, all-pervasive bodhichitta,
Great and perfect in the natural state of the ground.

Awareness manifest as path is Bodhichitta,
The avenue of emptiness, undivided and unlimited,
Not shown through metaphors or words, signless
Free in and of itself, without hope of results.

Awareness, in and of itself the master of transformation
Is beyond manipulation by intellect and thought.
Simply by coming to rest, all at once, in what was already the case,
No Soma-reward whatsoever is there to get.

For instance, the non-darkness of the dawn
Does not occur over and over again during the day.
Once awareness has alighted on its own ground
Don't get caught by repeated fabrication -- this is crucial.

Some will watch their neurotic thoughts;
Merely recognizing stasis and movement as such,
They sieze upon ineffable awareness as 'Dzogchen'.
That's like pretending brass is gold;
They end up far afield of the genuine path.

Awareness and timeless awareness translate as the nature of prajna,
Regardless of acumen, and without witnessing or clinging to any experience.
Timeless awareness, timelessly occurring as self-arisen prajna
Instantly purifies, instantly frees,
And cures the blindness of ambition.

Just as the ocean's waves do not leave the water,
Wanting to liberate and purify on a case-by-case basis--
Where there's nothing else besides the essential expression
Of dynamic energy--is extreme delusion!

Therefore, once settled in the natural state
That's always already there,
Don't waste your time accomplishing
Meditation and purification.
Let go of physical activities altogether; be like a mountain.
Let go of spoken discussion and self-expression altogether, be like a mute.
Let go of mental views and meditations altogether; be like space.
Whoever lets go of all doings, entering the vast yogic expanse of equipoise
Without making effort, is sure to be free.

Whenever eating, sleeping or bustling about,
Don't overstep awareness' natural self-mastery of activity.
In the yoga of post-meditation, a sublimely expansive state,
During any kind of happiness or suffering,
To recognize the unreal phenomena of experience is crucial.

Don't mistake the crucial points of conduct--
Take them right up.
Don't act crazy in the realm of the view;
To maintain tranquility, refinement and attention is a crucial point.
Don't view the realm of conduct with crazed obsession;
At all times keep a quintessential instruction in mind.
Buddhahood is not attained by physical and verbal conduct;
Hold the fort of omniscient Buddha, your innate awareness,
And without a doubt you will reach Buddhahood in this life.

Though the geezer of unawareness
Is untutored in tantric tradition,
The All-Creating Monarch of Samsara and Nirvana
Gives this advice to himself--
So he's eloquent when it comes to declaring [this]
For guests receiving his last will and testament. 

This untrue, unfalse advice of Maya (illusion)
Is offered to you, Konchok Tashi, who has no mind
From the corpse whose consciousness has dissolved into ultimate space,
Dudjompa [Conqueror of Demons].

KYE MA!

Lord of the Triple Gem, root and lineage, dakinis and protectors!
This reckless child who thoughtlessly clings to the reality of
The impermanent phenomena produced as a result of his own personality of bad karma
Wanders deluded, sunk in the great ocean of pointless cyclic existence.
Not making this precious human life meaningful, one feels regret.
Calling on you, sublime refuge, please remember me!
Don't give up your compassion, do you see me, Three Roots deities?
Deliver me from the expanse of samsara now, chief of Dakinis!
In this country, the parents of myself and others are suffering.
Seen from the outside, though of good lineage and not lacking in wealth,
Though seeming to have excellent status in the higher realms,
Inwardly they are depressed.
Pursuing pursuing the display of material wealth, time is wasted.
While the number of years lived increases
Like their interest-bearing accounts,
Opportunities for life's activities in the future gradually run out.
Spinning one's head in self-deception, like a firebrand's circle,
Alas, the greatest purpose of a precious human life fades from view.
The heap of accumulated devices and tools inside a vast home --
How will they help, and whose life will they extend?
Remembering the sidelong glances of the faces
Of noble, beautiful ladies --
How will this dispel the misery now
Of Death's inviting gaze?
This stupid fellow, who carelessly finds himself left behind--
Look on him quickly, and introduce him
To the consort of the natural power of innate awareness!
Lead him to the trailhead of
The path to full awakening that is not difficult, and never
Abandon this being, giving him the relief
Of ultimate refuge.

Testament of Kadalipa, Translation

Testament of Kelapa

Thus do I seem to recall, that at one time, long ago in Central India, there was a Brahmin boy named Devadas. He became madly infatuated with a Shudra girl, so his parents punished him by throwing him out of the house. After begging for a while on the streets of the streets of Shravasti, he entered the employ of a prostitute. Having faith that she was a timeless awareness emanation of Arya Tara, he received empowerments and pith instructions, and gained the power of the mantras of Tara and Varahi. Later he became a merchant selling fruits such as mangos and bananas in the market, and was known as "Mr. Banana" (Kadalipa) or Kelapa for short. Guessing I must be the contemporary rebirth of that person, and considering the situation of religion in my present homeland, due to Kelapa's previous habit and because of awakening previous karma due to practice here and now, this is what I think:

[Introduction]

Namo Ajitavijaye!

Quintessence of all Victorious Ones, Vidyamantradhara,
With the prajna-brilliance of Jinaputra Paramadana,
Supreme fearless yogic activity taming the hard to tame,
To the lord of Vidyadharas, Ajitanatha,
I pay homage in body, speech and mind.

I am a heart-son of Kadalipa.
In the heartless (coreless) center of a plantain tree,
One has good fortune to discover a sweet heart of honey.
Similarly, in a weak-hearted person of bad habits like myself
The form of a heartless corpse walks, [yet] contains heart-essence.

As a playful display of affection, I compose this song, which is hard to hear.
If it is discouraging for others who have problems,
Let them store it in a remote Alaya-cave,
And later, it should become clear.
Since I have faults just like those discussed here,
There is no end to the karma of regurgitation,
And having to re-eat my own vomit.

[Part I]

Nowadays, most Tibetan lamas
Have snuck the old ways of Brahmins inside of red robes.
They discriminate the ranks of various peoples and races,
Assigning them to high and low grades.
They patch religion over with the artifice
Of sectarian bigotry.
They create conflicts among the words and meaning
Of various cultural conventions.
Their view is found in the variety of staged dramas they perform.
Gathering retinues of disciples, they sound off
With the high-faluting voice of empowerment rituals.
Inviting disciples' devotion, they take Triple Gem wealth in their hands.
After getting their disciples' money,
They loudly broadcast aspiration prayers into space.
Consider whether they have "become pure lineage holders".
Those of the same race closely connected,
They gradually install in hierarchies.
Those of other races they keep at a distance,
Confined in humble-pie prisons.
They make prayers to increase the great fortune of the doctrine and beings.
[But], to the stages of the path [applied to] beings' abilities,
They blind themselves.
Though Tathagatagarbha is not fundamentally obscured,
Like the Brahmanical tradition, they discriminate
Amongst races and clothing-fashions.
Alas! The Buddha-dharma with its countless paths
Functions to accomplish benefit of countless beings.
Sugatagarbha's qualities pervade all beings.
The trailhead of the ultimate path to happiness is not far off.
Dharma talk of "drip" and "drops", of ghouls and apparitions,
Is pointless, isn't it?
"Deep, deep samadhi" is just a reference point, no?
Lamas that have reached a pure stage of quality
Do not compartmentalize people and Dharma,
Do not see qualities and beings as so different,
Like the earth and sky.
The have no reference point for their own versus others' benefit.

This is the first chapter, "Excoriating the faults of myself and others".


[Part II]

Even someone like me, learned in the five sciences,
Goes running after whatever trivial things he sees,
And is reborn in the triple world,
Subsumed by the six proliferating āyatanas --
Woe! This little hollow of deluded mind is strange!

The eighty-four thousand Dharmas that dispel delusion
Are taught for the sake of innate luminosity,
Not to inspire respect in other people.
Endless words and meanings are spoken to benefit beings,
But why heap endless commentary on each of those?
Herding the livestock of erroneous assumptions
Into the corral of the four reliances of provisional and definitive meaning
Like a rancher, to transform bad ideas into good ones,
One is misled.
As might a wealthy Brahmin surrounded by cattle,
If those [ideas] are not liberated in the non-conceptual Dharmadhatu,
One dies of spiritual starvation.

My, my! Charlatans who sell the wealth of the supreme vehicle,
If their underbellies do not predigest the teachings they proclaim,
As much as they expound, they are consumed by elemental spirits and ghosts.
They are tormented by the cancer of conduct based on disparate, distracting viewpoints.
They are intoxicated by the intellect's home-brew
Of personally formulated advice.
They indulge the perversions of a know-it-all's pilfered knowledge.
Texts that disclose the sense of non-elaborated [emptiness]
They make into bones of angry contention.
The sense of non-elaboration is made
Into an elaborate point of obsession.
So, like tadpoles writhing on dusty ground,
They are misguided on crooked paths,
And lacking water of Dharma, die of thirst.

How sad! Oddballs addicted to words and meanings,
How will they every understand the meaningful words
Of humble, easygoing people?
How will they be able to drink the advice nectar
Of the great awareness-holders?
Though the manner of the unambitious, clueless and tongue-tied
Be subject to derision,
Aside from that, how else would one maintain
The manner of nonconceptuality transcending intellect?
So may those who make a living by
Accumulating intellectual fabrications,
Have the good fortune of becoming a clueless, methodless savant,
And be reborn as the faithful [student] of a person
Of unequalled kindness, like my own guru-protector!

།བླུན་དད་སྤྲེའུ་ཚོགས་བསླུ་ཞིང་བསྐྲད།
།དེ་ནི་དཀོན་མཆོག་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཞེས།


He who scampers like a clever fox
In the view of duality-mind
Befuddles and gives chase 
To the dumb-faith monkey troop: 
That is Konchok Tashi.
