Taking Back the Chiminea

This time of year someone took back the chiminea
Removing it surreptitiously from a backdoor step
It was not legally theft nor could it have been certainly trespassing.
The act was simply a line drawn and a message,
“You have it all now, honey, but I take this.
You can't have anything ever again from me
That isn't yours to take.”
Janice beyond the pearly gates is still reminding us
Nothing left to lose is freedom
Freedom to choose
The road less traveled, the loneliest
But scenery there is the wildest
The elements and winds so rare and raw
The creatures strange and ethereal
The sounds and the grounds are oddly familiar,
Well-worn paths and detailed log books abound
Vigilant eagles, auguring crows and obstacle bears go around
Animals of flight, beasts of night and holders of the ground
Gather when they will, for no law holds them down
The mischievous, frivilous, curious, the imperiled
The breath-drinkers and bloodthirsty living on smell
Or living in flesh and bone, respond to the knell
Before them heaping delicacies and with primal scenes
We foil and abet, wagering with scraps
To buy our full-course meal,
Crowded amongst the living, inviting forthwith the dead
Haunting stony hollows and sagging roofs that barely live
Circling at dusk tracing the breadth and width of the mound
Holding the promise of whatever full abides
In the forgotten vow of legions.

Her Profusion

Her profusion never ends and never starts
Begins with a bang expressing her part
That carries the code, line after line
Accumulates precipitating time upon time
Never failing to not disappoint
Connecting dot upon dot, leg after joint,
Displaying a candy cane forest of wares
Creating abundance by multiplication
Avoiding annoyance and denying frustration
Playing the part of a gem unawares
Plunging into human affairs
Holding a torch above for the nations
Talking to ancient spirits and hollows
Tending to inspire devotion and patience
Ever present to the mind of that one
Whom the gods reknow, when the battle is done.

Vajra-Music of Honest Reportage and Literal Truth
In praise of the supreme lord of the mandala Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo

Part 1
By Mipham Rinpoche (1846-1902)

To the lotus feet of the glorious Lama,
Peerless wisdom, love and ability,
With an immaculate mind of faith I pay homage,
And play this music of honest reportage.

Your qualities are a precious treasure;
How could one describe them in full?
Having seen them with limited perception,
Here I describe them just a little.

In this forest thicket of degeneration,
When devious analysts, like monkeys,
Actually catch sight of you, from whatever point of view,
They congregate at your feet.

Following after incredible reports of knowledge and accomplishments
Heard from afar, they follow up on them.
Even observing you from up close for a long time,
You are all the more difficult to fathom.

However much one brings an intellectual view to bear,
You are seen to be faultless and full of qualities;
So how much more amazing your benefit when seen
By those who follow you, free of concepts and faithfully!

Nowadays in this sanctum of snow mountains
Though renowned as accomplished, they are devoid of learning and nobility,
Or though learned, it is hard to see anyone with accomplishment.
It is hard to find someone with a full measure of qualities--
Learned, noble and accomplished, all three--
Which increase in you, as if in competition.

To see such a wealth of qualities is rare,
And even if amazing, few would recognize them.
If it is hard to compete with any one of these individually,
Then how could anyone compete with your liberated life,
Whose excellence combines them all,
As if totally filling all of space?

Though not established through ones' own rigpa-awareness
Following after mere reports,
Those who recite like books like echoes,
Many such would fight like pugilists (?ba la dza).

Those inflated with false intellectual pride
Fail to find the secret pith of intellect;
Like water in a narrow gorge,
They go foaming at the mouth in assemblies of fools.

You, on the other hand, live the life of an autodidact,
Studying a vast array of commentarial traditions.
You hold the great tradition of the secret essence of definitude,
Which is not narrow, like Mount Sumeru.

If one were to bring to your attention
All the great texts one could carry, at great expense of effort,
Containing the compositions composed by a hundred geniuses,
Under the lofty white umbrella of learning,
Like gold extracted by a smelting process,
To remove all of their faults of impurity,
You quickly and easily master them all.

As profound as the definitive secret essence
Of sutra and tantra may be,
To that extent you are even more the master
Of the prodigies of learning.

Already encompassing
All of the outer and inner sciences,
Your intelligence is like space.
You are a dharma-treasure, and dharma-treasury.

Though many are renowned as learned
Someone free of the darkness of doubt
Having the light rays of the sun of timeless awareness
With immaculate knowledge such as yours, is rare.

Your eloquent speech unravels in an instant
A hundred difficult points of profound texts.
Like pointing a weapon at space,
There is no occasion for dispute. Amazing!

All the words and meanings of your writing
Are profound, clear and beautiful,
Ablaze with a hundred perfections of poesy;
In terms of eloquence, yours is by far the most sublime.

Though your confidence in the view has reached lofty heights
Thinking of the teachings as your own immaculate measure,
You maintain a holy lifestyle.
This is the tradition of sublime holders of the teachings.

Nevertheless, here at the foot of the teachings,
There are many who would bring disrepute upon the two-phased path,
With various forms of bad behavior,
Thus disrupting the Victor's teachings.

Devoid of conduct that is beyond reproach,
Such that wins over the perceptions of others,
With Dharma and modes of conduct they violate the Tantras,
Spreading them amongst the faithless.

Such badly behaved leaders of outcastes
Are in abundance on the surface of this earth.
Demons emanate in order to bring doubts
Even towards authentic mantra practitioners.

You, with the two profound stages,
Full like an overbrimming vase
In order to protect lowly beings,
Have pure conduct like a lotus.

With beautiful lama's robes of saffron,
Like the light of the moon at dawn,
Your body beautifully wrapped
Emits a wonderful scent of discipline.

With a perfectly pure life lived,
Straining the mind-oceans of all persons everywhere,
You make them all into extraordinary
Precious holy persons and patrons.

In the midst of zodiacs of constellations of vow-holders,
Bearing the light of pure Vinaya vows,
With discipline pleasing to sublime beings,
Your excellent light is like the moon.

Those who arrogantly presume to be expert in the meaning
Of partisan textual traditions of the various sciences,
Or those using subtle disiciplines related to
Recitation, austerity and samadhi to
Obtain trivial fruits of accomplishment,
Who sell those for the sake of fame in this life,
Create the basis for dispute amongst evil retinues,
Similar to an unbearable horde of demons.

But nowadays, when it comes to the proper way to benefit
With the excellent methods of the three wheels
Of study, renunciation and activity,
Who ever thinks about that?

NAMO PADMĀKARAYE

In the great dharmadhatu of original purity, the expanse of awareness
The clueless, credulous child of previous karma
Though uncertain about the opportunities lofty good fortune,
Is now introduced [to it], by the Lama's kindness.
Wandering so long in the market of eight worldly dharmas,
In the story of an irregular person like this,
In the course of endless, pointless activities,
One scarcely knows where one has ended up --
Is that not a shame?
However, even though one does not know how to seize
The All-Good ancestors' wealth owners' -- the glorious lamas' -- own fortune
For oneself, though conduct one finds
Confidence -- that is good fortune, A HO!
With the character of vowing henceforth to remain naturally present
As long as mother-beings are not liberated,
By dint of lineage blessings being transferred,
I wonder if I have it -- so sing happily.
By dint of stable armor,  that is thinking (sems-pa)
There is no need whatsoever
To doubt one's ability shoulder the responsibility
Of Triple Gem and Triple Root,
I say so, here.

May this irruptive gasp from a human corpse utterly assimilated by the supports of the Triple Gem be virtuous -- and auspicious.

Cut-up Legs(1) of a Madman

By Dodrupchen RInpoche III, Tenpai Nyima

A HO!

In the basic space of the magnificent space-yoga,
One with light-body, the youth-vase of spontaneous presence,
The original Buddha of coalescence, light-rays of wisdom and compassion-method
Inseparable, be a healing presence in the lotus of my heart!

We, young small children of good lineage
May not yet have perfected the power of realization
But seeing the well-worn path trodden by Vidyadhara ancestors,
What should disappoint the king of the supreme vehicle?

Amongst vehicles the highest is Atiyoga;
Amongst methods, the easiest is meditationless equipoise.
In the experiential condition of whatever happens, chasing after appearances
Holds no appeal whatsoever.
Now, one would rather doze motionless, like a corpse.

Through analysis no resting place is found; thinking is a daydream.
Through looking nothing is seen; there is no basis and nothing remaining.
In the state of the view of non-doing, meditation is self-settling.
Now, all doings put out of mind, one wants to sleep alone.

Though one says “originally pure essence”, there is no satisfaction with purity.
“Innate ground of liberation”, one says, but there is nothing on a ground of liberation.
Seeing many yogis deluded by their own ranting,
Now I have no heart for saying “this is right” or “this is how must be”.

Pure is originally pure, so no need for absolute purity.
Accomplishment is spontaneous presence, so why accomplish something now?
Adroitly casting off elaborations of removing something or putting something back on,
Now I want to remain relaxed in the state of how things already are.

Clinging to elaborations of effort and action are mentally created ties that bind.
Remaining ordinary without effort is the usual business of confusion.
So-called “effort” and “effortless”are fake designs of concepts.
Now I want to sleep in the aimless state of “whatever”!

Appearance is not external, it is the awareness-glow of dharmakaya.
Emptiness is not internal, it is all-encompassing equality.
Seamless penetration is not outside or inside; knowing that as it is,
Now, not being scattered or withdrawn, I want to sit up straight.

Though profound awareness is sharp, there is nothing for it to puncture.
Though the way of abiding is much-studied, it is hard to understand, so
When the fundamental state is pointed out, it doesn't seem to exist as such.
Now, I want to cut off the shabby elaborations of intellect.

Though lacking the means to express a hundred volumes of hair-splitting,
If a single wide-open gaze of magnificent, natural equipoise,
Should cut the corners of a hundred thousand elaborations all at once,
That is a stony jaw to crush chewy verbal conventions.

Traveling the Dharma circuit all your life, you die empty-handed.
Putting your head into meditation is the rumor-mill of death and rebirth.
Putting aside such wearisome, fruitless preoccupations,
I want to dissolve into the vast primordial inner expanse.

Samsara is suffering, it is said, but it is the natural glow of conceptuality.
Nirvana is peace, it is said, but it is the dharmata-nature of mind.
Samsara and Nirvana are the food and clothing of awareness and unawareness.
Deathless enlightenment, which is peace, is not far off.

Indivisible dharmadhatu-awareness, bereft of obscuration, is the innate fundamental expanse.
When engagement and irruption of the triple world's neurosis is forcibly dispelled,
In a single sacred mirror of timeless awareness of the great expanse,
That is the resolution of meditation, rolling all dharmas into one equally,

A HO! So happy, this madman of Doshö!
Seeing the mainstream explanatory tradition (gzhung lugs)
Of the lineage transmission of the omniscient father-guru,
There is no joy in the talk of simple-minded children.
When it comes to the supreme vehicle of the Great Perfection,
Now there's a special doctrine.

So to that end having invoked the excellent auspice of interdependence,
On occasion one sees the happy white smile of vidyadharas.
In the ultimate primordial expanse with six special features
I proffer a festival of mother and son luminosities merged.

Thus, the madman of Dorong, Jigme Tenpa'i Gyaltsen, cut up the stanza-legs of a madman's ravings [and presented them here]. Virtue and good auspices!

HO!

The uncanny display of previous karma, aspiration and holy being's vow [or, 'final parinirvana = thugs dam]
With the love between brothers and sisters previously linked, and from good practice,
Arise clouds of ritual practice--fulfilling promises that did not exist before--
Arranged across the sapphire sky of Dharmadhatu -- Hey!

Though doing the work of an underling, a humble ordinary person,
One dances a display to delight the hearts of the holy ones of old.
Though the eyes that see in connection with the light of sun and moon
Are unopened, still, one is born in the five-fold mandala.

In the cool shady spot of the impure five aggregates,
When this easy life's activities are on the verge of exhaustion,
The pure energy of compassion, able to give all without accepting or rejecting,
Is capable of spontaneous accomplishment of all activities -- Hey, that is amazing!

As for hurriedly running about, the residual karma of the five poisons,
With the great blessing of the Three Roots of vidyadharas' lineage,
In the course of sketchy activities in this life,
In this unstable, cherished body, the energy of the Guru's intent is ignited.

The material wealth (nor) and children (bu) of unlaid plans
Are predicted, in view of the higher phases of the Vehicles
The springtime garden of future fortunate ones
Begins as a trivial pursuit, like children's games.

Though the unwished-for complete result is not attained,
Like ordinary ore-stone that already always exists as wealth,
Even if one is unaware of the facets of one's original face
In the course of empowerments' ripening, one is sure to find it -- EMAHO!

So says a sketchy worldling with few reference points.  May 14, 2018.
